Even if it feels like beging for comments I'd very much appreciate constructive criticism. First time making icons and all.

oo, i quite like those
the 2 on the far left: i prefer the coloring of the top one, but i like the framing of the bottom better - jack's face is... er less cut off
top, middle is good
bottom, right is possibly my fave :D

top, right: good framing, but not digging the background texture (there's something that looks like a moon coming out of jack's head)

bottom, middle: the font stands out too much, and that harsh blue streak sort of cuts the image in half, leading the eye to nowhere

um... helpful?

Absolutely helpful.
Looks like a combination of the two far left is in order. You know the far left on the bottom reminds me of fluffy pastel ponies. Drugs maybe? Who knows.
That thing that looks like a moon is actually a coffee stain on a crumpled piece of paper. It looks rather boring in comparison.
And the blue streak, well that was a first attempt to use a gradient. They're kind of complcated.
Thank you for the con crit. I wouldn't have noticed those details and I agree with you the top middle and the bottom right are my favorites. So, and now I will add numbvers to these damn icons, this is driving me nuts. ;)

yeah, playing with gradients and paintbrushy things, always takes me a few tries
and then sometimes i discover something on accident that's really cool, but doesn't fit the image

fluffy ponies, sure
or UNICORNS and rainbows
actually, yes, that :D

I can only hope that they're all very sparkly. Which reminds me of a fic I read yesterday, it had sparkling Jack and it didn't suck at all. Q rec'd it at TWH. I'll go get the link. BRB.

I'm useless for constructive criticism, because I don't make icons, I just admire them. But I love the bottom row (and if you don't mind, I'm nabbing all of them!) The ones on the top row are a bit too grainy for me -- you can't see straightaway what you're looking at. I love your use of the blue backgrounds, though.

I cannot believe they are your first icons. They're beautiful! I'm not good at giving criticism constructive or otherwise as I'm not an icon maker and technology challenged. I can say that I love them and I'm snagging. I will credit you and thank you very much!

There are like three icons I made before but they were not good enough for sharing. And really with those pretty men as bases can one fail?

Dude. I like the loyalty one b/c it says loyalty. I am a simple creature, what can I say? Although I will agree w/ kel that maybe the blue streak is a little dark? Maybe "loyalty" on number 6's background? I also like number 3, in spite of not really caring for Jack's "I steal your cereal" face. As for the heads and bodies icons, those aren't really my thing, but then I was a kid in the early 80s and we have way too many studio pics of me and my brother w/ floaty heads and regular bodies, so I think I am programmed to be a little "eh" about them.
Very creative and keep up the good work!

I can make another one combining 6. and the font. Thank you for the input.

Was there any particular reason why studio pics had floaty heads in the 80s?

Sweet! I have taken, and it's mine, all mine! Bwahahahahahahaha! Ahem. Well, it's yours. But I am using it. :P It is actually perfect for this fic I have been working on off-and-on for way too long, so yay! Motivation to finish.

Was there any particular reason why studio pics had floaty heads in the 80s?

Because it was creepy. I recall one in particular where my brother is sitting in the background, and then my huge grinning head occupies the foreground. I am two, staring off into the distance, and grinning like a banshee over my four year old brother's minuscule form. I think I know who you are from crue's or kel's or someone's journal, and you missed the 80s. In some ways, you are lucky. (But in others -- sadness! You missed the glory of Wham!)

It is so weird to see someone else using an icon that I made. Weird in a nice way. I'm glad you like it. =D And more fic is always good to hear.

Now I have a really creepy image of a blonde two-year-old grinning into an old analog camera with scary, little and pointy teeth. Probably te drugs. ;) I know you from their journals and I think TWU. You're right I missed the 80s since I'm pretty new to lj and in general. I was born in 1992 but I do know Wham! and not just "Last Christmas". :P

Well, thankfully I can erase the creepy image from your head, since I am a brunette and not a blonde. :P And I never grew my pointy canine teeth, so no pointy teeth, either, ha!

"Last Christmas" -- oh, the horror. "Careless Whisper" -- now that is a song to belt in the shower!

Dude, you're younger than kids I used to babysit for. I hope I never babysat you! You're not from New Hampshire, USA, by any chance, are you?

LOL. Nope, I have never been to New Hampshire nor the US but you can babysit any time you see fit. I moved to Germany in April and before that I lived in Turkey, which wasn't exactly easy for a gay, male teenager as you can probably reckon.

I have been to Turkey! Just to Istanbul (and the little tourist trip up the Bosphorus to spend a few hours in Asia). We stayed literally feet from the Topkapi Palace, and went to all the historical, touristy sites in that part of Istanbul. Honestly, the men were horrific. I was w/ M, whom I live w/, and we're both girls. Well, women, but this was about three years ago. We were 26. Anyhow, I have never been hit on more in my entire life. And not good hit on, but creepy hit on. And they all thought I was Australian, which I finally realized was b/c my bag was Kangol brand and the kangaroo was throwing them off. The weirdest time was when these two boys (like 18, 19 - which, I realize is older than you, but I'll call you a young man; these dudes were boys) looked up from their backgammon game and said, "Hey! Are you two brothers? We're sisters! Want to take us to a party?" Snerk. But seriously, all the men were really starting to put a dent in our enjoyment, but then we crossed the Galata Bridge and it was a whole new world. We hiked up that road that's just for pedestrians, and it has all the shops and restaurants and movie theaters, up to the square. We went on a Starbucks search (successful) and went to the movies (there was an intermission - we don't have those in the States). Not a single person looked at us like we didn't belong. No catcalls, no leering. It was awesome. I felt like I actually saw a tiny glimpse of real!Turkey. Plus, we saw the Galata Tower, which I loved, and the next day I bought a painting of it at the Grand Bazaar, and I am looking at it right now!

So to sum up, Turkey yay! But totally see how it could be *very* difficult to be a gay teenager there. Are you Turkish, or were you just living there? And I am friending you, as I quiz you on your life story and share my touristy little squee over your former home.

Well then, let's start the quizzing. I've been to Istanbul for a day, the day before we came to Germany and we managed to walk across the Bosphorus. I also got myself a fancy pair of sun glasses at the Bazaar, cheaper of course than for the tourists, he. It was like Edirne only much bigger and more colorful.
I only lived in Edirne for two years, which is a moderately big town in the very west of Turkey but I grew up in Tablakaya. That is like in the middle of nowhere between the steppe and mountains to be precise.
I wouldn't really know how it would have been to be an out gay teen in Tablakaya because we moved to Edirne when I was 14 and I never mentioned it to anyone nor did I ever do anything about it. Then we moved and I met D who was working at the city's hospital as a part of med school last spring. There was some "bones jumping" involved on my part. He's German, 22, and hawt. It's also a plus that we like to hang out (when we see each other) and chat a lot via email for when we don't see each other.
I'm not completely Turkish, my mom is German/Jewish and my dad Turkish.

But totally see how it could be *very* difficult to be a gay teenager there.
I never got any mentionable grief about my sexual orientation when we lived in Edirne but it was made clear that I better not flaunt it. I'm not a big fan of PDoA so I didn't feel too affected but in principal it is unacceptable of course. It was harder for D, he likes to fondle randomly and mark territory, but he managed. Technically we were illicit (illegal?) in Turkey since I was 15 and he was 21 at that time. Now, in Germany no one could mind less whom I flirt with or fuck. Even though I'm attending a boarding school there are no limitations in that department. Although I do feel like a loser admitting that I have a fucking curfew.

As for men constantly hitting on you, well, it’s kind of embarrassing to admit that but they do it because they want to get married to Westerners, then move there and bring their families with them. I know it sounds like the worst soap opera story line one could come up with at short notice but it’s unfortunately true. There is still this myth about “the better world in the west” and since Muslim women can’t marry non Muslims, the men disgrace themselves and embarrass female tourists with their indiscretions. My parents are obviously the exception. I mean they’ve been married for over 25 years before they decided to move to “the better world in the west”. This was supposed to sound less cynical.

I'd say that the 8th icons looks even closer to it but it isn't an edited version of yours. The background texture is by pebls (http://pebls.deviantart.com/) on deviant_art and the framing is basically the only way I could get both their heads and their bodies into the icon.
Well, that and I posted these icons to my journal before you posted yours to [livejournal.com profile] fifth_period, so it looks like coincidence.
